First Two Classes Kick Off in January, Offering Opportunity for Hands-On Greenhouse Fun and Learning this Winter
Adults and kids interested in gardening and nature have a new option for hands-on learning and fun beginning in January. Johnson’s Urban Farm, the newly launched farm and greenhouse, has launched a series of Gardening Workshops – providing the opportunity to learn some of the basics of growing your own garden, learning about nature – and having some hands-on fun both in the greenhouse and throughout the unique new Urban Farm.
The Johnson’s Urban Farm Gardening Workshops will be held at Johnson’s Urban Farm, located at 287 Wild Horse Road on Hilton Head Island. There are different classes for both adults and children throughout the region, and class sizes are limited to 10 to encourage maximum learning and hands-on participation. Workshops are led by Stacy Windreich, an established leader in organic farming techniques and manager of the farm at Johnson’s Urban Farm. Stacy has owned an organic gardening business on Martha’s Vineyard and is a Holistic Nutritionist.
In order to encourage as many kids as possible to attend the Kids Workshops, Johnson’s Urban Farm has set up a “Give a Gift to Others” Workshop Scholarship Program for qualifying students. For more information about the scholarship, as well as ways for interested individuals/businesses to contribute to the fund, click here or call 877-486-2522.
January Workshops are as follows:
Back to Nature: Intro to Growing Veggies
January 16th, 10 am-12 pm
This class will focus on the fundamentals of starting a vegetable garden and will explore topics such as site selection, soil, planting, crops, seeds, harvesting, beneficial insects and more. All participants will also receive seed samples to take home for planting.
January 23rd, 10 am – 12 pm
In this fun-filled, hands-on class, students will learn about the life cycles of worms and how they benefit gardens and farms. The class will conduct a “worm investigation” in order to develop a greater understanding and appreciation for this wonderful organism.
